Handknit’s First Ever Knit-along!

Sometimes I just love the way awesome ideas are conceived. A small group of us were sitting in a circle knitting on a quiet Sunday morning during Glenna C’s Lace 101 class, with a pile of Glenna’s beautiful lace sample pieces in front of us. Among them was Glenna’s version of Elizabeth Zimmerman’s Pi Shawl.

Every single one of us had previously admired that shawl and said out loud, “I want to knit that”. I’m sure I said it more than once myself and I believe I was fondling the piece the most. In fact I think the only reason I was sitting at the table was to admire the shawl, as I wasn’t actually participating in the class itself.

So Glenna started telling us about how Zimmerman intended the shawl as a Summer project because it’s so airy and simple, and how this shawl is a great introduction to lace knitting, and then she said, “HEY, we should have a knit-along!”. Such a GREAT idea, I knew at that moment that we would make it happen.

Kate and I are super excited to be doing this Knit-along with you, as it will be a first ever for both of us. A Knit-along is not a new idea by any means- but it’s new for us and for Handknit Yarn Studio, and that’s what makes it so exciting.

So if you’d like to participate, here are the details:

You must purchase a copy of Elizabeth Zimmerman’s Knitters Almanac from Handknit.

You must purchase your sock/fingering weight yarn from Handknit. You’ll need a minimum of two skeins (about 800 yards). We have eight to choose from: Anzula Squishy, Indigodragonfly Merino Sock and MCN Sock, Malabrigo Sock, Manos del Uruguay Alegria and Fino, Sweet Georgia Tough Love Sock and Cashluxe Fine. (Pssst: we’re making the Baa Ram Ewe Titus available to you if you really want it, even though it won’t be on the shelves until September…I know I’ll be using Titus…)

You’ll need a set of double point needles, 16″ circular and 24″ circular, all in 5mm or US 8.

On Sunday 11 August, at 10 am, Handknit Yarn Studio will be celebrating it’s first ever Knit-along with a cast-on party for all participants.

While we would love to see you all at the party, you do not actually need to be present to take part in the Knit-along. You only need to buy the pattern and the yarn, and finish by the deadline in order to qualify for the Draw Prize.

Deadline to complete the project is October 15th, and all participants who complete their project by the deadline will be entered into a Draw Prize for a $60 Store Credit (before tax).

If you’re interested in joining our Knit-along, please let us know as soon as possible. The earlier the better!

  1. Chatted with Kate and picked my yarn today!

I am creating my project page and I think we need a tag for Ravelry and a discussion board on your Rav page so we can stay in touch even when we’re not knitting together. Can you tell I LOVE KALs?!

    Really excited!!

  2. I would like to join the knit-along but wondered how difficult the project is. I have knit for a long time but would not consider myself more than an intermediate knitter. Cheers, looking forward to the possibility.

    • Iris,
This project would be perfect for you. It’s an easy introduction to lace knitting and Pi Shawl Construction. You can choose a basic yarn over pattern or venture into more challenging lace sections- it’s entirely up to you. The great thing about a knit-along too is that there will be plenty of other knitters doing the same thing, so we can help each other through the tricky bits! Come in this week and pick out some yarn if you’re interested.
