Colourwork Big and Small

Posted on January 30 2018

Want to find a cure for the February blahs? Here at Handknit Yarn Studio, we think there is no better way than to add some vibrant woollen colourwork to your crafting projects. If you have been thinking about putting some new skills in your knitting toolkit, this is the perfect month to try it. Once you understand a couple of basic techniques — such as yarn floats and chart work, you are good to go.

To help you understand this skill, Kate and Tracy are offering some free “MIni Clinics” on Sunday, February 4th and 11th from 1:30-2 pm. We will help you understand a couple of basic concepts and show you to make your work look great. We have a very simple project for you to try as well called Hearts Cup Cozy - a very simple  Valentine’s Day coffee cup cozy — that will give you the confidence to tackle bigger projects like mittens and sweaters. GULP!

Featured Yarns for Colourwork

For February, we’ll be featuring some wools we think are perfect for the colourwork technique- Tuku Fingering and Koigu. Both are available in a wide variety of colours and will make the most lovely projects. Take a look at Cathy’s sheep in the shop from Susan B. Anderson in Tuku fingering - it has a great rustic feel. Our other favourite wool, Koigu, is dyed in Ontario and is a wonderful superwash merino wool that makes for great stitch definition. Thinking of trying mittens? We love the work of the Canadian designer Spilly Jane. The Polska Mittens shown above are done in Koigu if you want to see one of her amazing designs.  And check out our Ravelry group page under the colourwork bundles section for some other projects to try. Other yarns featured this month are Lang Yarns Magic Tweed, Jawoll Superwash, and Filatura di Crosa Zarina.

We have also added another knitting circle from 11am to 1pm on Saturdays, so bring your knitting down to the shop and enjoy some great conversation with other knitters. Deanne is our new crochet instructor- available for private lessons as well as group classes.  Check out her wonderful Crochet Sampler Scarf in-store or just sign up to the class and let her show you how to make one for yourself.
